If you are part of a Salesforce eco-system, you can not ignore the buzz word ‘Lightning’ and all the excitement around it. Organisations all around the globe are trying to understand how they can improve their bottom-line by leveraging the new UI platform offering by Salesforce. 

 

Lightning is the next generation user interface in Salesforce aimed at improved productivity and enhanced user experiences. It does not replace the existing user interface, now known as ‘Classic’ rather than it provides an option for organisations to assess and decide which one is fit for purpose.

Lightning Experience –  This is the epicentre of the Lightning platform. It provides modern user experience optimized for speed. Some of the features are drag and drop of components, responsive design, new customizable home page, Kanban view for Opportunity, dynamic tab navigation, Opportunity Sales Path, enhanced dashboard and improved search etc. 

Lightning Framework – The event-driven framework enables developers to build reusable components and customize apps. It also provides many out of the box lightning components and requisite library to build custom components. This is the core engine powering all Lightning features in Salesforce.  

 

 

Lightning App Builder –  A drag and drop technology for building and customizing reusable apps fast and easy. 

Lightning Out – It provides a mechanism for Salesforce lightning components to be embedded and run outside the Salesforce platform e.g. Microsoft SharePoint, Customer Portal, any third-party web application. 

App Exchange for Components – A marketplace for out of box Lightning components sold and distributed by ISV partners. 

Lightning Bolt – It enables organisations to rapidly build communities with greater user experience and seamless integration with CRM, based on reusable community templates.  

Lightning Design System – Style guides and modern UX best practices to build pixel perfect apps in Salesforce. 

Lightning Data Services – A framework that makes use of client-side caching technique through a Shared Record Cache, thus improving performance and enabling offline data capabilities. 

Locker Service – A Lightning security framework that guards components from malicious attacks. 

Salesforce Einstein – A new offering of artificial intelligence (AI) tool to help determine companies be more predictive about their customers. Leverage Einstein to predict the quality of a lead, recommend best next steps, and even automate tasks. 

Major Benefits of transition to Lightning 

With the Summer 2017 release, many of the essential features that companies rely on for day-to-day use are supported in Lightning. If you have been pondering over transitioning from Classic to Lightning, now is the time to make the switch. Salesforce has made it clear that its future innovations are all directed towards Lightning and if you read between the lines, those new innovative features may not be available on Classic. Apart from leveraging all the features mentioned above, some other food for thoughts are: 

Reusability – Unlike Visualforce pages, Lightning components are highly reusable. You build it once and reuse in any page or context.  

Portability –  Salesforce Lightning provides seamless user experience across platforms e.g. Windows, Mac, IOS, & Android. Lightning is platform agnostic.  

Faster Development –  With Drag & Drop feature and use of templates, a Salesforce administrator can build Lightning applications faster and with ease, not just Developers! 

Consistent and Resilient User Interface – With responsive feature embedded in Lightning, you will get consistent rendering of applications irrespective of platform or screen size. 

 

Should you transition to Lightning? 

Lightning, no doubt is a game changer but transitioning to Lightning is not a straight forward task. Some organisations will reap great benefits, but others may have some challenges in adopting. Although there are many benefits with switching to Lightning, not all functionality is supported. Before making the switch, a few major considerations need your attention: 

 

  • Existing AppExchange Apps: If you are using any AppExchange apps, ensure that they are Lightning Ready. If the app is supported in the Lightning Experience, a “Lightning Ready” sash appears on its AppExchange listing. 
  • Custom Javascript buttons: Not supported within Lightning, however quick actions, triggers, or workflow rules can be built as a viable alternative solution. 
  • Visualforce Pages: If your company relies heavily on custom Visualforce pages, you will want to review these and determine which ones are necessary and need to be migrated to a new Salesforce Lightning Component. 
  • Salesforce Editions & Licenses – Be aware that Lightning is not supported in all the editions. Some user licenses may not have access to Lightning.
